Coordinate Connectors dan Paired Conjunctions

Kalau kamu menulis chat, menyambung dua kalimat dengan koma itu biasa: 'Hujan deras, aku nggak jadi berangkat.' Di bahasa Inggris tulis, kebiasaan ini justru jadi kesalahan yang sering diuji TOEFL. Dua kalimat lengkap nggak bisa disambung cuma pakai koma. Butuh 'pengait'.

Bayangkan setiap klausa sebagai gerbong kereta yang punya subjek dan verb sendiri. Dua gerbong butuh satu pengait, yaitu coordinate conjunction. Di bagian Structure, banyak soal sebenarnya cuma mengecek tiga hal: subjeknya cukup, verb-nya cukup, dan pengaitnya cukup.

Connector: and, but, or, so, yet (ada juga nor dan for, tapi lebih jarang muncul).

Aturan hitungnya sederhana: ==jumlah connector = jumlah klausa dikurangi satu==. Dua klausa butuh satu connector. Dua klausa tanpa connector disebut comma splice (dua kalimat ditempel pakai koma). Connector ada tapi klausa kedua kehilangan subjek atau verb juga salah.

Ada satu pengecualian yang sah: kalau subjeknya sama, kamu boleh menghapus subjek kedua dan langsung menyambung dua verb, misalnya 'The river flooded the valley and destroyed several farms.' Di sini cuma ada satu subjek dengan dua verb, bukan dua klausa.

Dua klausa lengkap butuh tepat satu connector. Koma saja nggak cukup, dua connector kebanyakan.

Konjungsi bukan transition

Kata seperti however, therefore, moreover, dan as a result artinya mirip connector, tapi secara tata bahasa mereka adverb. Mereka nggak bisa menyambung dua klausa cuma dengan koma. Sebelum mereka harus ada titik koma atau titik. Ini salah satu jebakan yang paling halus, karena artinya terasa pas banget.

Paired conjunctions

Beberapa connector datang berpasangan. Pasangannya tetap dan nggak boleh ditukar. Kalau kamu lihat separuh pasangan, langsung cari separuh lainnya. Ini salah satu tipe soal yang paling cepat dijawab kalau kamu hafal pasangannya.

Selain pasangannya, perhatikan juga bentuk kata setelah masing-masing bagian. Bagian setelah separuh pertama dan separuh kedua harus setara: noun dengan noun, adjective dengan adjective, phrase dengan phrase. Ini dibahas lebih lengkap di lesson parallel structure.

Blank setelah koma dan connector: biasanya jawabannya subjek + verb (', and ____' diisi 'it reduced').
Blank di posisi connector: pilih connector yang maknanya cocok, dan buang preposisi seperti despite, because of, atau during yang nggak bisa diikuti klausa.
Blank setelah koma tanpa connector: jawabannya hampir selalu connector + subjek, misalnya 'so subjects' atau 'but others'.
Blank berisi separuh pasangan: lihat separuh lainnya di kalimat (ada 'nor'? jawabannya 'neither').

Bagaimana topik ini muncul di Written Expression

Pasangan yang salah: either ... nor, both ... or, not only ... and also.
Klausa kedua kehilangan verb: ', and they also storing' seharusnya 'they also store'.
Subjek ganda setelah connector: 'and his work it became' seharusnya 'and his work became'.
Connector yang maknanya nggak cocok: 'or' dipakai untuk menambah informasi, atau 'so' dipakai untuk kontras.
Klausa tanpa connector (comma splice): '..., its shape has changed little' seharusnya 'but its shape...'.

Begitu lihat separuh pasangan (neither, either, both, not only), cari separuh lainnya dulu sebelum membaca pilihan lain.
